At Epiphany, children await the arrival of the Magi. A small earthenware or clay pot, often with starshaped cut-outs, is placed by the front step with a lighted candle inside and a small handful of bundled hay near by. These are to light the way of the Magi and refresh their camels as they wander the streets in search of the Christ child. It is not uncommon for a child to find, in the morning, that the hay has been replaced by a favorite fruit or a bit of marzipan.
